Last week (11th May), Sierra Leone’s Energy Revolution was launched at the Bintumani Conference Centre in Freetown.

The initiative with Britain’s development aid ministry (DFID) is part of the UK Energy Africa campaign, which aims to help African countries reach a global development goal agreed by U.N. member states to ensure access to energy for all by 2030.

Although KKY was not invited due to the current partisan nature of our political realm. However, it’s worth highlighting some of his efforts in the Energy sector prior to the Energy Revolution Launch.

✅October 2015, Dr. Yumkella was invited by UK’s Minister of State for International Development – Hon. Grant Shapps for the official launch of the DFID led Energy Africa campaign in London. Ministers from Ethiopia, Somalia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria signed new partnership agreements to boost energy access in their respective countries.

✅DFID’s Energy Africa campaign is aligned with the new Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG-7)– ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. A hallmark of KKY’s relentless efforts spanning several years to place energy at the forefront of the global development agenda.

✅Power For All Campaign:
One of the official co-sponsors of Sierra Leone’s Energy Revolution Lunch event last week. It’s worth noting that this initiative was launched at the 2015 Sustainable Energy for All forum during KKY’s tenure as CEO. To advance renewable, decentralized electrification solutions as the fastest, most cost-effective and sustainable approach to universal energy access.

✅October 2015, at the UN General Assembly in New York – KKY facilitated an epic joint declaration between Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy and Power, Ambassador Henry O. Macauley and the European the Union to support the Energy Sector in Sierra Leone and significantly transform the sector to achieve the Ministry’s vision to increase Sierra Leone’s energy capacity to 1000 MW.

Dr. Yumkella is a Sierra Leonean that we all should be proud of, for his astute leadership at the over the years and his contributions development in Sierra Leone.
